Replacing your lost registration in South Carolina is a fairly simple process. The state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) even lets you take care of it online.

Your current registration must be in good standing to get a duplicate. You'll need to provide your current tag (license plate) number to get started, and you can pay the $1 fee with your credit card.

If your address has changed, you'll need to update your address online first.

Lost Tags

You'll need to complete Form 452 if your South Carolina license plate has been stolen or lost. Submit the form in person to your local DMV office or by mail to:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles
  • DMV Customer Service Unit
  • Attention: Mail-In Registration
  • P.O. Box 1498
  • Blythewood, SC 29016-0019

The tag replacement fee is $6, and the DMV will issue you a new tag number. If you had a personalized or vanity plate, the DMV will issue a standard tag. You can apply for a replacement vanity plate using the same combination of letters and numbers after one year, on most tags. For more information, call (803) 896-9638.
